Q about pairing.

i have a 29g and one large white striped Maroon whom ive had for about 2 months now. my lfs said to try removing him and re introduce him when i add another maroon. can i do that? i was also thinking of partitioning a part of the tank, would that be a good idea too? how likely are they to pair? the only factor keeping me from buying is if they dont pair, i have nowhere to take the new maroon.

Well, your LFS isn't giving you bad advice exactly and the reintroduction theory has been known to work, however I think that the advice given might not be a good idea for the size tank you have. Maybe a 55 gallon for two maroons or a mated pair. By now your first (large) maroon has claimed that whole tank to itself, if you try to introduce another maroon then it will have to be the same size if not larger than your current one. Even then you might as well put little knives, swords or guns in there because IMO, IME there will be a rummble.
I had a gold strip maroon that was 5 1/2 inches long and I did see him kill other clownfish and if you had two that reached that size in a 30 gallon then I'd say you were maxed out on fish right there.
Personally I don't think I'd try it in that size tank, but of course its your tank you make the call.

ok, that helps alot. i guess ill hold off with the mating idea. i just wanted to liven up my tank. cause all i have now are a sandstar, cleaner shrimp, maroon, lawnmower blenny, a polyps, condi, and a tiny bta. i wanted to add some colorful fish that are inexpensive and hardy, and ive had luck with the maroon. what else do you recommend thats realy colorful, hardy, and inexpensive ($20 max)?

How big is your Maroon now? I had a breeding paid of Maroons (lost them in a ice storm about a month ago). I had a large Maroon that was about 2 inches and I introduced a new Maroon, less than one inch, by using a small plastic specimen box, one of those small plastic boxes with a plastic top that had an opening in the top and vents. I introduced the smaller Maroon to my 29g tank and when the larger Maroon would chase after the smaller one I would chase him back into the plastic box with a net and secure him in it for a while. I continued this for about a week and slowly they adapted to each other. After about 6 months of being in the tank together without the larger one attacking the smaller one they ended up pairing off and spawned every other week. I have read others on this site doing the same thing. If you have any other questions I can try to answer them. Hope this helps a little.

By all means share the experience, thats why we are here.
Glad it worked for you, was that in your 29 gallon as well romeofoeve?
BTW I didn't say it wouldn't work, just might not be a good idea for a 29 gallon, better in a 55 IMO with two maroons.

he/she is about 2.5-3"
As far as pairing, how do they interact, do they spend swimming, eating and sleeping together? what ate the odds of them pairing up?
