Q-tip Transformation

Ok, so I have a Q-tip sponge in my tank, and over the past two weeks or so it has been transforming into a mutant Q-tip... Looks pretty cool, but I'm not sure what is going on... I've attached the best picture I can get... Basically all over the sides it is growing these almost antlerish arms.. Any ideas?

Trust me, if you have one...there are many more shortly to come. They seem to thrive in the back of my tank where theres not as much light and lower flow. I guess they can only help cause they filter the water. I have had a couple look like the one you have there but most stay "normal".
