QT info question

Okay - I've searched the threads & feel like an idiot...I have a damsel in a 4-month 29 gal tank that has 2 little "salt" spots. Assuming this is ich & I'll be QT'ing him when I get home tonight -- I have a couple of dumb questions:
1 - When you move the sick fish to the qt tank do you acclimate them? (ziploc bag, bucket etc...)
2 - When treatment is over and you put fish back same thing?
my qt tank is not connected to main tank (little 5 gal hexagon bought for other reasons). This tank isn't set up yet, so I guess I could use water from main tank - but won't that much water restart cycling? (I change 1 1/2 gal per week).
(this is the restart---so to speak from my dilemma 2 weeks ago)

A 5 gal hex is sort of small for a hospital tank, but for a (smsll) damsel it may be OK.
Taking 5 gal from the 29 gal shouldn't cause much of a problem.
Doing a 5 gal water change shouldn't cause a cycle to start.
No need to acclimate if using exhisting water.
When returning, just check levels... You could do a quick acclimation, say 15-20 min when retrrning the damsel to be safe. A damsel can take quite a bit.

I use the drip method. I put mine in a bucket with main tank water then drip water from Qt into the bucket for an hour or so. Just throwing him into the tank is not good. exspecialy if the water params are off.

If you start your Q tank with water from your main tank, then you shouldn't need to acclimate. However, the water in your Q tank can change quickly, especially in a 5g. Therefore, I do recommend that you keep a close eye on it and be prepared to change water if necessary. Because of that, I do suggest you re-acclimate to the main tank when you put it back.
