qt tank set up

I am trying to find some info and can not seem to find it. Ihave lost a few fish because I did not qt my wife says I told you so and I just lower my head in shame> Anyway I need to know how to set up a qt tank. Do I use water from my main tank or new water and can i set it up as "as needed" or does it have to be up and running all the time? Thanx for any info..

They way that I do it is this. I put a small corner filter in my sump. When I need the QT tank, I add water from the main tank, remove the filter from the sump and put in the QT tank. After treatment I dispose of the water and corner filter media. Then place the corner filter in the sump to reestablish a new bateria bed. This way none of the medicine gets back to the main tank. I only use the QT tank when needed. HTH

what about bringing new fish home should I just set up the tank when I get home and then aclimate to qt tank and for how long should they be in qt tank?

Set the QT tank up before bringing home the new arrival. Acclimate to the QT tank. Depending on the situation QT time will vary. I feel that 2-3 weeks is good. Make sure that the new fish is eating and healthy looking. If nothing shows up within this time period. It should be good to go to the main tank. HTH

it's almost worth the extra 30 bucks for a decent hang on filter. with this filter and a heater, this should be all you need. i have a 10g that i only use for medicating sick fish, and when i do i use water from main tank. it doesn't have any sand or rocks. i only use when needed. ;)
