A QT tank is a tank set up to hold your new fish to ensure thier health and to reduce the threat of contaminating your main display tank. You would generally set up your QT tank by taking some LR or filter media, etc from your main tank to get the bio filtration going. Then add hiding places of inert materials for the fish to feel secure, ie. PVC, ceramics, etc. You must cycle the QT tank as the fish will stay there for a reccomended 2 weeks as long as no signs of disease or stress arise. If problems show up, you must then treat and re-start the wating period. HTH.

I just keep an old 10 gallon tank for when a fish gets sick. You don't have to keep one up and running all of the time.

Basically, a qt is the same as a regular tank, only it doesn't have all the fish and pretty rockwork, etc., etc. in it. The qt is a great place to put a fish if it is sick so it does not contaminate the tank and you can treat it without worrying about the treatment getting anyone else sick. Also, new fish should be kept in a qt for a few weeks to check for diseases so they don't get everyone else in the main tank sick. HTH :)
