How many of you use a qt? I was told by my lfs guy (who is very knowledgable) not to use a qt. He is one to take care of the whole tank at once since whoever is sick is probably going to spread it to the others.
I was curious as to how many of you use qts, and how much of a PITA (pain in the a**) they are to set up. Thanks!

Well,I set one up because of an ick outbreak.Mine was a quick jobby.I got a 30 g tank from my lfs and trading one of the new cartrages for one of hers with the bios already there. Now it has a damsel that lives there.I use it for new additions if I have not been able to observe the fish.I always try to check a potential new fish for at least 2 weeks. If its a new arrival,I quarentine it.If its not,I don't.The reason being is that I don't like to put a healthy fish under more stress than needed. If I'm able to observe and know its healthy, what is the point of the q?It is also a good idea to have around for a fish that gets sick.Especially if you have lr or corals or inverts like I do.

gobylover makes a excellent point. I keep 2 extra tanks in case of a problem where I can set it up in a few minutes. I also use these for QT on new fish as my experiences with my lfs have not been the best the last few months. The guy is a nice fellow but way over his ski's when it comes to how he takes care of his tanks.

I definately use one. Most of the time that is. Perfect reason is this. I recently bought a blue hippo tang and decided not to QT it. Within a few days he got ich ( stress) Now, you cant treat a reef tank with the meds or it will kill your inverts ( most meds)and use can't use copper at all in there. Now, I had to totally take the tank apart (rocks and everything) to catch the little bugger. So, what I am saying is that if I had put him i qt in the beginnig, I wouldn't have had to take the tank apart to catch him and I could have treated the fish with copper and all would be well.

Definately set up a QT tank. I have had to learn this in a very hard way. As of right now abosolutely nothing will live in my tank. And all of this could have been avoided by QT new fish. So from now on all fish are going to go through QT. It sucks not being able to have any fish in such a beautiful tank. I think my tank is going to be stocked w/ inverts forever. Maybe in 5 months I'll be able to have another fish. TJ

To make another point here it is that if you have everything ready to go it takes a few minutes to crank up a HT. If you know you are bringing home a fish then you just set up the QT tank a day or 2 before. I used to try to keep one going but found if I did that I ended up with a few fish in it and now I decided to leave them there (that is how I got to 10 tanks). Now I force myself to take it down asap so I won't be tempted.
