I have a 44 gallon tank that will only have 3 small fish when I am done stocking. So I have a 10 gallon QT. When you start buying and housing tangs I think you should consider a 55 gallon QT.

I have a 5g hex for my QT. It came as a kit from Wally world for $30. I added a powerhead and a heater and was in business.
It is too small to QT anything big (like a tang), but I only have a 55g so no tangs for me!

so like will a 20 be good for a niger trigger
For a small niger, a 20 would be fine. Your QT should be proportionate to the size of fish you plan to keep. IMO, a 10 would be minimal, even foe small gobies, clowns, etc.. Larger fish need more space and you also need to consider the possibility of QT'ing them once they get larger.
I use a 40 breeder, but usually have some larger fish in my system.

Absolutely not. For QTing any large fish, a 55 is ideal.
If you have anything over a 180 and you want to get bigger fish, a larger QT is certainly neccessary.

Yeah, but when you start dealing with an established tank where you need to buy fish that are already 6 to 7", a big QT is inevitable. That was the point to which my 210 was at.

My QT's are 35, 55 and a 120 gallon. The 120 is my old tank and I use them for my 250g FOWLR and 90g reef, but for sure bigger is better IMO. It is also a good idea to have enough room for all your fish incase something happens to your DT.

if you can do a 5 you can do a 10...id say a 10 is the smallest id go...
i am using my old 55g DT as a QT now...seems to be the way to go, the hippo i bought likes it much better than the 29 he was in at the store for 2 months

yeah id get one of the cheaper air driven protein skimmers too...or a seaclone skimmer...i had all the stuff to set up the 55 for salt again since i went to a 120 and had other smaller QT tanks set up...now im down to a 120DT and 55 QT... but before i had a 55 DT a 29 DT and 10G QT...
i use the seaclone for the QT now but i liked the miniflotor better, its fairly cheap and airdriven, just requires a good air pump...
