I too have also heard that ich can lay dorment and that a healthy fish can fight it for months or years. but if they get stressed or sick then the ich over powers the fish and then it shows up... This is what I have heard.. But I dont have any facts to prove it.
pepito, i don't think it is neccesarily dormant, just that it takes longer (much to our dismay) to hatch the free swimming spawn. As stated in the article there is no proof of ich ever having a dormant stage.

This is especially alarming when considering that the QT is supposed to be a place of solace for the newcommer.
I never really thought of the QT as a place of solace per se. I was under the impression that when fish get transfered from one tank (LFS) to another (QT) that they get stressed. When the fist gets stressed out in the QT it allows for the visualization of any disease/parasite that might be infecting the fish, and therefore an easy place to treat them should the need arise. Whereas if the fish is stressed out in the DT, it's a pain to isolate the fish, quarantine it, and then leave the DT fallow for several weeks...even more difficult if you already have other fish in there.
This might be incorrect, but this was my understanding.
