Question about adding a Tang

I was wondering how long is a good idea to wait before adding a tang to a system after it has cycled. A LFS tried to tell me I needed to wait a min of 3 months 6 being better.

WOW, a lfs saying something right? Yeah you need to wait till your tank is established, I'd wait at least 6mns.
What size tank do you have? You can't put a tang in less than say, 90, and some tangs need 125 (5feet) or more.

I have a 180 g with around 100# LR but has not been set up for 6 months. Is 6 months an absolute minimum.

There are no absolutes with saltwater fish. But I wouldn't add a tang before then. Other may say you have to wait less or even longer.

dirk, you can add a tang at 3 months making sure that your water is at the correct levels
just make sure to feed it plenty of greens ( nori) is great just make sure to purchase the correct one.(rick)

I just have a question as to the reason for waiting is it to build up their food supply in the tank or is it for water maturity/live rock maturity. :notsure:

All of the above...
With your size tank though...3months would be OK...Just make sure you don't stock to fast..
There is a different mentality for larger tanks as they are more stable and can handle bio loads better...
But you can still stock them too fast for the bacteria to keep up..
When you get a chance you should add more LR.
At a Minimum you should have 1lbs/Gal.
