question about aeration?

My local pet store owner says I should not aerate. He told me the bimonthly 25% water change would adequately supply my tank with oxygen. To the contrary, I have a book here that states I should. Which is correct?

You should airate. But not with an air stone. There are plenty of was to do this.
Skimmer......Overflow.....Pointing a powerhead at the water......
Plz let us know more about your setup, and we can help futher.

I have a 50 gallon tank with two Emperor 280 filter systems with biowheels, two penguin power heads model 550 and a water heater. The system was bought used with about 20 pounds of live rock.

Welcome to the boards. Hopefully we can help. There is a difference between aeration and circulation. To aerate means to place air bubbles into such as a fresh water tank. Circulation means that the water is constantly moving. Ideal turnover (flow) is 20-25x tank size. E.G. 50x20=1000 gallons per hour.

Also it is recommended that you have 1-2 lbs. of live rock LR to each gallon. It is a wonderful filter and also carries/house many benefical animals/bacteria.

No aeration via bubbles. Current is what you need. For a fish-only tank you need 10x the volume of your tank pumped per hour. For a reef tank you need 20-20x.
Also bimonthly water changes are not recommended. Stick to weekly, biweekly, or monthly. I recommend 5% weekly if you have time, but no more that 20% monthly.
