Question about ball valve

I have a 90 gallon tank that i pre-drilled. It has been up and running for over a year. My pump recently died, so I bought a Mag 7 to replace it. I have a problem though, the pump is pumping water back to tank quicker than it is draining. can I put a ball valve in the return line or will that put too much pressure on the pump? I have seen people put the valves on the return line, but I am just checking here to make sure.

putting the ball on the return (out) side of the pump is equivalent to having more head (a longer/higher return line). It will decrease flow but not stress the pump.
What you don't ever want to do is restrict the inflow of the pump, because then the pump will be running partly dry and will burn out in no time short. killed an Iwaki rlt 55 to ingrain that lesson.
