Question about bio balls

Do you ever clean the bio balls

If they are not properly maintained with cleaned filter floss on top of them and the bioballs get clogged with with debris, then yes, they need to be cleaned in fresh saltwater and immediately replaced. Make sure that you put filterfloss on top of them to keep them clean.
It's mainly the surface area that bioballs are concerned with, and if they are clogging up, they are not doing their jobs.

I agree - in addition - if the bioballs are your primary source of bio fitration then when you clean you should only clean 25% at any one time so as not to remove too much of your bacterial colony.

oh, that's great. I forgot to add that. lol. If you get rid of your bacteria colony, you are going to get an ugly white cloud in your tank.

any recs on the type of filter floss? My setup will have a sump, but I've always used a cannister. I don't have any filter floss yet, but see that there are many different types... Any recs?
