Some of our freshwater fish in out other tank have developed ICK. Would a saltwater dip work for them like freshwater dips work for saltwater fish?

I don't think you could acclimate freshwater fish to salt, although you can add that aquarium salt (for freshwater) to help frevent ick, but since you already have it I'll tell you that
when I had my freshwater set-up, I had ick only once but the Mardel's Maracyns products worked really well. I've used their product for fungus, and pop-eye. I've always had success with them though.

I'm not talking about acclimating them to saltwater. I know that saltwater ICK cannot live in freshwater, that's why you do the dip, so, I was thinking that freshwater ICK cannot live in saltwater. Wouldn't this work then? I just don't want to treat my tank and dye my new tank with that blue dye that comes with the ICK treatments. We have also been adding that aquarium salt to the tank from day one, but they still got ICK.

I have had ich twice in my other freshwater tanks. A saltwater dip will work if you have hardy fish(no angels or discus) and if the temp is the same, and if you only put them in for 1 minute or so. I have had the best luck using seachem copuramine. It will cure sw and fw ich within a few days. good luck.

When my angels (FW) had ich all I did was raise the temp to over 83F ich cannot survive in warmer water temps. But I would not raise the temp dramaticlly a couple degrees a day
After that all ich disappeared has not come back since. The reason I did it this way was because I always have a problem when I medicate my fish usually die. try it if you want but it did work for me and my angels they are doing great now

I just put them in a tank with no seals and used Mardel's Maracyn. This way it won't stain anything blue.
Thanks for the posts though.

Hey, just for the record, I apologize for my misuse of words...
I didn't mean "acclimate", I thought you were talking about that gradual saline drop some poeple do, only I thought you wanted to keep adding salt blah, blah,blah...not just the quick dip.
Anyway, I'm sorry!!

the product that worked the best for me was mela fix. You want to raise the temp to just over 80 degrees. This makes the ich want to get off of the fish and mulitply in the water. Then the medicine can do its job. Also, you should take the carbon out of your filter. You should do a water change every time you add the medicine. I changed around 5 - 7 gallons in my 29 gallon tank when my fish caught the ick. You can add some acquarium salt, but follow the directions on the salt. I would also recommending washing a bit of the gravel with gravel wash every time you do a water change. Furthermore, I would take out most of the decorations and wash them too. I threw out my driftwood and plants when my fish had the ick and just bought more. I had a few casualties, but they were the very small fish and I saved most. Good luck.
