Hello all, I have my biowheel still running on my tank since DAY 1, does anybody know if this is ok? or is it a nitrate factory and remove it ALA BIO BALLS? Regards!

I haven't ever put the biowheels on mine. I find them to be loud, completely useless because you have all the LR in your tank and like Acrylic said; they eventually become nitrate traps.

how ARE your nitrates. If you have a good sand bed they should not be a problem. Keep the filter clean and free of detrius. I think it may help break surface tension and oxygenate the water but I can't prove it. I have 2 tanks one with and one without.

I do not know whether a biowheel will eventually become detrimental to a system, however I can positively say that they are unnecessary in a tank that has 1-2 pounds of live rock per gallon.

How long has your tank been running for? I ran two tanks with bio-wheels for quite some time (about 1 yr.), but eventually took them out ( I have 2lbs. per gallon). If you are still adding bio-load to the tank and are concerned it can't hurt to leave them in but if you feel thay are becoming nitrate traps chuck them.

It may be broke if your trates are up. IMO, I would get rid of them. With all that live rock, you shouldn't need them.

how deep sand. In order to reduce nitrates you need anaerobic area. I am not an expert but I can't see how you could get enough anaerobic through rock alone.

The biowheel, like bioballs, is NOT a nitrate factory.
It is very efficient at the conversion of ammonia to nitrite to nitrate due to the ability to foster the growth of aerobic bacteria.
It may not be necessary, but nitrate problems exist for a variety of reasons. If you have these reasons, you can blame the wheel all you want, but it isn't its fault

1) Overstocking/overfeeding - what do you have, how often and what do you feed?
2) Export mechanisms - how often and how much do you change water? How often do you remove macroalgae from your system? How effective is your skimmer.
3) Janitorial staff - healthy sand bed and clean up crew.
If you overfeed, overstock, etc you can be doing everything "right" and still have nitrate problems. So it is important to eliminate other sources. I don't personally think you will have an issue removing the wheels, but it may not really be the source of your problems.

Yes, because nitrates are only a minor thing you are addressing. There are loads of other compounds that accumulate or are used that need, IMO, to be replenished. It is a closed system...unnatural in and of itself. To not even replace some water now and then, to me, is really pushing it.
