How many fish and what type?
What is the waste # now?
Do you have live rock to help?
I would think that if you take the CC out you loose some filtration and till the new sand grows in you may need to do some water changes.

Live sand does not need to cycle, What happens is you lose some good bacteria from the CC. Since there may not be enough good bacteria you MIGHT get a small ammonia spike. If you have enough live rock you should be fine.

You will probably see a small cycle......What you could do is remove the CC slowly till it's all removed and then add the LS, but if you change all at once I would just keep an eye on my levels and be prepared for some water changes if things begin to elevate.

We just moved 13 tanks and only left the fish in there overnight. Any more than that and you are risking ammonia. We drained out the water, brought the tanks over with only the sand in the tank. Filled it back up and let it sit overnight. We never had problems with a mini cycle.

You left the sand in the tank when you moved it? Isn't that like trying to move a piano, I put my sand from a 55g in a bucket once and we had to take half out so we could move the bucket. I would also think the strain on the tank seams would be horrendous.

Glad the move went well, by the way. You did so many changes to the new place... any updates on pictures with the tanks up?

Hi James,

I just did something along the lines of removing the CC are putting in live sand. First, you will be so happy with the live sand. It looks so much better and opens up different kinds of fish you can keep. Flower was a great help with advice on how to complete this. I did not get a spike or mini cycle but I tested daily and had water ready for any WC's needed. The rock will help. How much live sand are you putting in there? The best advice Flower gave me was plan ahead and make sure when you do it there is a LFS and maybe a hardware store open at the time of the change (don't do it late at night just in case). Good luck!!!!

If you're using the bagged live sand you buy off the shelf in your LFS, chances are good that you will get some cycle - really all those bags contain is bacteria that are breaking down all the stuff that was once living in the sand before it got dumped into an air tight plastic bag and set on the shelf for who knows how long.

On the other hand, if you are using true established live sand from someone elses tank, then you shouldn't experience much of a cycle if any.

As stated, I would have plenty of made-up replacement water on hand to perform water changes if they are needed. Good luck, and as stated, you'll enjoy the sandbed.

That depends on the depth on the sand bed you want....that should give you about 1 1/2" in a standard 29G rectangle aquarium

probably also depends on how much Live rock you have. the more LR you have the less likley you will see a spike. the bacteria built up will be able to process it well enough if there is a bunch.

yeah, so 50 lbs of lr in a 29 gallon tank is alot, you should have a bunch of bacteria built up on those suckers.
Should be just fine.
At the least test yuor water for a few days after the move looking for ammonia, if any is present then do a good sized water change to help out your beneficial bacteria :)
