Question about quarantine

Hi,
I haven't started my tank yet, but I'm trying to get some advice.
My LFS said to treat all new fish in a quarantine tank for 2 weeks for ich, no matter if you see it or not.
Do you all do this?
Also, what do I need to set up a quarantine tank. I'm planning on only having small fish.
My main tank would be 80 gal, FOWLR.
thanks
Jenn

Hey Jennman
Definitely get a quarantine tank
Get a 20 gallon tank get some live rock and some pvc pipes put all that in the tank and get a air driven sponge filter and put it in there

Mine is a 10 g, no substrate, no lr, no inverts to look cute, HOT filter, strip lighting, quiet room.
Some meds will kill ls, lr, inverts so don't put them in there.
Smaller the better when you read directions of doses.
HOT filter will work fine since you are not skimming
During most meds, take out carbon filter. After meds put in carbon filter to assist in taking out leftover meds.
Always keep ready.
That way the water is mature.
Quiet room normally for sick fish, but even new fish don't need to be stressed with constant traffic.
My 2 cents. Others will be along shortly I'm sure.

HOLY C'MOLY!!!! A LFS that actually gave out good advice. I'm printing and framing this thread... But seriously,
Yes you should QT. You can get a small tank from wal-mart, and a cheap filter too. No special lighting required, but you should put a some PVC pipe in the tank for the fish to hide in.

Okay, well at least I'm on the right track.
i don't know what a HOT filter is..little help?
Do you use water from your main tank to fill quarantine tank?
Also, do you quarantine inverts? Treat them as well?

Hang On Tank Filter, simple version. Just need something to keep water circulating so it won't 'spoil'.
Do you use water from your main tank to fill quarantine tank?
I do
Also, do you quarantine inverts?
I do but I have a 1gal tank, nice and cozy for them
Treat them as well?
Healthy water is usually all they need.
Remember, this is an up and ready tank everyday, all day. Check water perimeters, temp, filter power, daily top offs, and water changes.

JM, go to the disease and treatment section of this board. The first post on there is Basic FAQ. Beth did and excellent write up about QT and what is needed for a QT.
I have to admit that I am also amazed at getting good advice from a LFS.
