Question about rocks/coral

Ok I'm trying to understand this here. I understand LR, I have LS in tank and want to do a FO tank, (reef maybe later as I learn more) what type of rock should I add for the fish to hide behind etc. I was looking at coral rock and found a smoking deal on some on ----. I just want to understand it before I buy it. If I understand this rock is dead, correct? No special care its just rock? And it needs to be curred correct? Again just another newbie question. Thanks for the speedy answers the auction ends in 25 minutes and if it a can use it I'll buy it.

Well I won the auction and bought 12 pieces of 4-6" coral rock that I'll put in my tank for decoration. Any additional input would be apreciated, thanks.

Even though you want to do a fowlr tank you still use lr. It does not need any special care. Dead rock will not have to be cycled again. A cycle is caused by things in the rock dying. Well if your rock is dead no cycle.

If it is "Dead rock" not LR then rinse it in hot fresh water before putting it in your tank, just in case it has dirt or chems or whatever. Other than that, no special treatment.

Please let us know what the rock looks like when it gets to you! There have been some horror stories posted about ---- rock purchases and, since I'm going to be getting some from somewhere soon, I'd like to hear about your experience. Pics would be super!

No problem, I was a little worried about buy the rock myself but the seller has good feedback and it didn't cost a whole lot. He is selling more starting bit @9.99 for 12 small pieces . I had some guy battle me out in the last 2 minutes so I paid a little more, 32.00 with shipping which I still think is a good deal since I priced some starting at $10.00 a piece at LFSs. As soon as I get it I'll post pics, should have it in about 5 days or so, its coming from PR.

Speaker, 5 days in transit? Unless it's being shipped in water, very unlikely at that price, all the life will be gone It'll be fine as a base rock I think but I can't imagine any life making it through that kind of delay. Make sure you clean it real well after that length of time. Hope I'm wrong but ....
Anyway, as you said, at that price it won't kill ya'

The rock is coming dead, he sundried it and I plan on giving it a nice hot fresh water bath when I get it. I was buying it to use as a base rock, its 12 4-6" flat pieces figured I could build on it. I'm all about lr and buy it as I have the $$$, two LSF have ok pricing, one $5.99 per lbs the other is $6.99 per lbs, and of course the one that is 5 minutes from me is the more expensive one. I just purchased a small piece the other day 2.25lbs, woohoo my first piece. Anyway my rock should ship out tomorrow and will arrive in 3-5 so I'll keep everyone posted and post up pics.

Depending on how big your tank is i would just get all live rock. Besides you get cool hitch hikers with live rock.
Just my opinion.

I have the feeling you will get either dead coral or it is normal "dead" rock (or will be after 5 day shipping).
In any case, PLEASE do what MaroonClownFan suggest: RINSE IT INTENSIVELY. For example, you never know if the rocks have been in a tank treated with copper or other chemicals. You don't want to have (trace) elements of those in your new tank

I ordered 200 lbs on Tues and was wondering what I could look forward to. Also how long does it take then to get it out?

sounds like it is simply base rock; which would make kind of pricey for that...although it may have some useful shape to it at the very least...& at some point, the LR from LFS would infuse itself into the base rock...
actually LR when shipped directly to you from the source thru a retailer may be in transit upwards of a week before it get's to you, longer still depending on the the day of the week even w/ 2 day delivery most online retailers offer; if it's packed well & good quality, most life will survive or come back...it's the shipper that sometimes causes the most damage even when the box IS marked FRAGILE

That was fast! I paid for the rock on Friday and it arrived today, here are a few pics attached below. The pieces aren't huge (about 4-6inches a few larger, which I knew when I purchased it)but they have some nice shape to them and should make for nice base rock. Not to mention the price was good, although I did have a bidding war and pay a few dollars more then I wanted too it still beats ***** at $9.99 a piece. He has other "kits" which are simliar to what I bought for $9.99 a bid and a few other larger cool shaped pieces for varing prices. I can tell you that he was very friendly with me, answered all my questions up front before I bid and shipped it to me very quickly. The rock was packed very nicely, no pieces were broken durring shipping and all pieces are full no chips etc.
