I purchased a torch coral about two months ago. When I first bought it the color was reddish with white tips. Now, the red is gone and it is all white. It still comes out daily but has no color. Is this normal or is there something wrong with it? Thanks.
I have two pc's - one is a smartlamp with 96w (50/50) and the other is a 110w. The torch is placed middle of the tank. What suggestions do you have for getting it back to its original color? Thanks.
Sounds like its stressed and has expelled its zooanthellia algaes...could be caused by any of a number of reasons. Post info on current water chemistry and list other corals. Do you direct feed at all or provide sources of phyto plankton. Mine has never responded well to direct feedings but I do dose DT's phyto once a week. Mine is under moderate lighting and mild current. Provide all the info you can and possibly folks here can help you return yours to health. nmreef@cox.net
what size tank is that in, waht are your current water params...eg. ammonia, nitrate nitrite, pH, temp, salinity, calcium, alk, etcc what do you feed it, blah lbah blah!
good luck

Here is the info about my tank. It is a 58g and has been set up since the first of December 2002. The current params are:
PH = 8.2
Ammonia = .25
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = 40 (has been at this level for about 4 weeks)
Salinity = 1.025
Calc = 560 (always runs high)
Alk = 11.25
In addition to the torch, I also have a small tentacle plate coral which isn't doing so well. It does still expand at night but I don't see the tentacles come out anymore. It is also brown around the edge. I also have a colt coral which I just added a week ago. It is doing fine. I also have a bubble coral that seems to be very healthy. It expands to a good size each day. I also have a goniopora (not sure if that is correct spelling) and it seems to be doing fine.
I have never directly fed the torch but do add DT once a week.
Thanks again for all your responses. If someone can coach me how to bring this back to good health I would greatly appreciate it.
There should not be any measurable ammonia in the tank. The nitrates are also kind of high. This species is a good indicator of water quality and uts indicating that you need to fix these two parameters.
what type of filtration are you using and do you have a skimmer? also your light is pretty low especially for lps you may want to move him to the top and upgrade the lighting
