Question for Colorado Tank Keepers

I have a 55g tank that I set up in July. I was getting about 1/2 gallon a day of evaporation as I leave the top open.
Well the weather has changed and it is much dryer in the house now as the heat is on. Our relative humidity in the house is currenlyt 35%
Well since the weather change (24 degrees outside) I have seen my evaporation rate double or more. I am down a gallon or more a day.
Is that normal for winter in CO? Should I replace the glass on top of the tank to minimize the evaporation?

My freind lives 1 mile away and he has a 90 gal and i have 75 gal, my evaporation is very minimal his is alot higer than mine.He also has a sump, I do not, I have a glass lid, he does not. My glass lid covers 3/4 of my tank, just the back 3 inches is open. Also my sons 30 has alot more evaporation than i do, he does not have a lid. people argue do not use a lid so you can have gas exchange, I agree just dont cover the whole thing cover 3/4 of it leaving the back few inches open.

I also have a 15g sump. I had heard about the gas exchange argument. My glass covers do cover all but about 2" in the back. When I go away, I put them in place. I am not thinking of leaving them on permanently.
Any others?

I don't live in Coloroda, but my evaporation loss per day did go down a lot when I built a canopy for my tank that covers all but the front 3 inches of the tank.
