My method is very similar to Chris's, except I clamp the PVC into a mitre box and use a handheld mitre saw for cutting. This method gives me clean and straight cuts, but I have to use my fingers or a file after cutting to release some of the PVC shavings.
I also use the purple primer and PVC glue method, but add a twist, literally. When I insert a piece of PVC pipe into a fitting, I give it about an 1/8 to a 1/4 of a turn as the pipe goes in. This pretty much assures full coverage of cement throughout the joint, assuming that it was applied properly.
I have never had a leak using these techniques.

I just use a hacksaw for the big stuff & then clean up the ends. For 1" & less I use a PVC cutter, they give a very straight clean cut with no cleanup required.

Invest in a hand-held pvc cutter.....It's slick than snot, u need no room to cut and they make very good cuts! U can pick one up and lowes or home deot for like $15.00 bucks and you will use it time and time again....iv'e had mine for like 10 years plus......

The brand I used was Oatey I got from Lowes. I used the purple primer and the regular PVC cement. It sets up quick and seems to be safe for the fish.
The hand held PVC cutter is the way to go.
