Question on Refractometer Use

I just got my refractometer. Just a quick question...
When you put the drops of water onto it, do you put the drops ontop of the glass flap or underneath the glass flap?
Thanks.

NM I figured it out...
Tank was at 29ppt...could this be why I have been suffering gradual invert loss?

That would do it. Most inverts require 35ppt - 39ppt. I keep all of my systems at 35ppt.
Did you calibrate the refratometer before you used it?

no...its an ATC refractometer...Im also not paying any attention to specific gravity...just ppt.
No calibration required right?

I calibrate or at least clean mine every month or water change when I use it.
If you test your water and then set your refractometer down the the salt will dry onto the lens, you can have residual salt even if you just wipe it. Then next time your readings could be off.
Or testing from one tank to another, you wouldn't just leave the water on from the last tank and then put a few drops from another tank on there would you?
Get it?

Ya the buildup issue is one I experienced with my suck hydrometer. No matter how much I would scrub the inside of it, it was impossible to get it fully clean.
I never trusted it and it was pissing me off to see my snails dying. A case of ich was all the justification I needed into dropping $60 for a refractometer.
