Question on sump

I currently have a 37g FO tank with LS, HOB PS and Fluval 304 cannister filter.
I am going to convert to a mini reef. I want to add a fuge below in the cabinet.
From what I have been reading here on this subject, the addition of a sump can eliminate the need for the cannister filter.
Rather than put the cannister filter back in the box, can I use it as a return to main tank?

fluval pumps will not suck water very good as they are gravity fed,i guess you could fill it with the ceramic beads and run as secondary or put floss and carbon in it and run it sporadically to polish your water.

So I assume that the cannister filter would not be necessary with a fuge in the system?
