Questions about Diatoms and Algae on Tongan Branch rock

traveler - I love your new avitar! Is that your pup? Aside from my husband my Boston Terrier is the love of my life (my aquarium comes in a close 2nd) hahaha
What advice would you have for setting up a QT that's both inexpensive and can be set up and then taken down. My LFS guy said to just use water taken from my DT and then a simple sponge filter. I'm reluctant to trust him because this is the same genious that also said that all I ever need to feed my fish is flake food. I'm a newbie, and even I know that is bad advice
