Quick Fuge Qs

Do you have to put the fuge above the main tank? The whole point is to circulate the water through the sump and fuge, right? If you were to pump up the water from the fuge wouldn't it chew up the pods, etc that you want.
Ok, so maybe its a lot of questions. I am just having trouble seeing how to set one up. I have seen pics posted and it looks like the fuges are in the sump? If someone could clear all this up for me it would be awesome!

I think even though the pump may get a few of the pods many of them still survive.

About 5% of the larger pods will get damaged. The rest make the trip with no problem... powerheads are a different story.
