I bought 5# live rock (2 pieces) that came in the on monday it was in shipping for 5 days (I know I went cheap :notsure: ) When I got it I found 2 dead star fish and what I think was a snail. So I cleaned everything off and scrubed it down. I then put the rock in a tub with 5gals of tap salt water with Stress Coat. I also put a huge pump in there to keep the water moving thinking the more water flow the better. My problem is that the pump is makeing the water 95 degrees. Should I take the pump out and replace it with a whisper over the tank filter and should I use carbon or not?
status of water in 5 gal tub:
PH 8.4
NITRATE 15ppm
AMMOONIA 0.75ppm
it has only been 2 days! should I just wait it out and let the temp run hot?
Just to clearify I should wait till readings are 0 to put rock in tank. Right?

You got too big of a pump for the little water volume. Pumps keep cool by the water they move. Either get a smaller pump or use a whisper filter, but no carbon. just the filter pad wouldn't hurt. You just want to keep the water moving. Monitor your ammonia and nitrite levels. When they get to zero, your rock is cured.

with that high of water temperature you are defeating the purpose on cycling and it might kill all helpful organisms LR is know for. definatly get a smaller pump

I agree you need something smaller to move the water. In my tank I use to make water all I use is alittle bitty teeny tiny "like" 10 or 15 GPH pump.
For rock you need Amonia to be 0 and Nitrites to be 0. The nitrates dont matter since all your moving is the rock and not the water. Since nitrates are in the water they could be 1 million and you could place the rock in the main tank.

I plan to buy more rock little at a time. Do you think it would be wise to put some water in the 55 gal and run the sump to cure the rock in.

what do you think i could do with the 55gal or would it just be a waste of time and would it be a bad idea to use the water out of the 55gal tank to do water changes in FOWLR tank?
