My temp stays pretty consistently between 78 and 80, depending on the time of day. Have you tried tweaking your heater down just a tad?

I keep mine at 80F useing a chiller, never changes..IMO, constant higher temps can mess with the metabalisum of fish ect. and shorten the life spands...

A 2 degree shift in 24 hours is ok? Just wondering because I thought you wanted to keep it constant. I shift between 79.5 and 80. I have also read about metabolism issues shortening the lifespan of fish in high temps. No experience it's just what i read somewhere.

My tank is kept at 80 but sometimes drops to 78. I heard that is fine as long as it doesnt fluctuate more then 2 degrees.

i don't see any problem with a little fluctuation as long as it stays within range 78-83. and the fluctuation is not rapidly changed
temps fluctuate even on the ocean (worst in summer)

At elevated temperatures is becomes more important than ever to have good circulation. As temperature rises the amount of oxygen dissolved in the water falls. At the same time, as temperature rises, fish use more oxygen. So...use goes up, and availability goes down. What this means is that the fish are under additional stress at higher temperatures, so be sure there is good circulation and oxygenation.
