I use it in my tank. It is the same sand as souhtdown. I put 5 bags in my 120, and it looks great.

I guess I'll continue paying 7.99 a bag for sand...since it seems no one can agree

If all you people want to save all this money, why don't you go to the beach and get some. FREE. Atleast you know where it came from. Atleast the bagged sand at the fish store was intended for a SWF tank. The sand isn"t really that expensive. It is those fish stores that a rippig us off. There is atleast a 100% mark up on everything thery sell. If not 200 %.Quickcrete is not intended for it. So do you think they care if it has any spills or chemicals in it. What is your weakest link. your sand.

i agree with the point of view that you should buy the stuff that is packaged for aquarium use in your aquarium. play sand is for the kids sand box. general purpose sand is used for weight, landscaping, etc. and so on............ why risk your whole tank and your time and money for a few dollars? but of course, IMO. good luck in what ever you choose.

I did the vinegar test on it yesterday. I got NO bubbles or fizzies or anything. So that means it is a no no correct?

well my .02 cents
alot of people like maestro say just pay 30-40 bucks, but thats easy to do when you have a 30 gallon tank etc. when you have to fill a 400 gallon system with sand then the last thing you want to do is pay 20 bucks a bag for sand when you need about 4-600 pounds of it. Especially when the cheaper play sand is just as good as "aquarium sand" I mean honestly i could take old castle sand bag it up and label it "AQUARIUM SAND" so does that mean youll buy it?? people have been using play sand for years and years with no complaints at all.. i have used both silica sand, and "aquarium sand" with no differences other than grain size, and the label on the bag that makes everyone feel real safe at night when they go to bed since it says "FOR USE IN AQUARIUMS"..
id ont know if anyone cares, just my opinion!

That's exactly the way I look at it too, Bobby.
If someone else wants to go out and pay $30 for a 15lb bag of sand, then be my guest. I go to Home Depot and buy the exact same thing for $3 for a 50lb bag.
I used the stuff from the fish store when I first got into the hobby. I had to deal with cyano outbreaks, hair algea out breaks, etc. on the sand.
In the 13 saltwater tanks I've had, in the past 2 years, I've used nothing but QuikCrete. Not only have I NEVER had a cyano outbreak, my pH has always been spot on, without me having to add any kind of buffers, etc.

I was really troubled by the type of sand to use in my new tank. Too many conflicting stuffs being said. I asked a lot of folks, some say to use it some says not to use it. There was a guy says a friend of his sets up saltwater tanks in people's home and office. He was using Southdawn sand and end up having problems one after another. He says he would never use'em again. And there's folks who uses them with no problem. Instead of getting into all that conflicting stuff, I just went ahead and bought aragonite sand instead to save all that trouble. I work over 72 hrs a week, don't have time for that hassle. If your prepared for anything that may happen down the road, good or bad, go ahead and use whatever is right for you. Best of luck! :happyfish
