I bought a 5 stage RO/DI unit from the big auction house. It does 100gpd ( I have a 125g tank, so I need a lot of water), you could get a way with a smaller unit. I believe that it is imperative to use RO water, if only to ward off the algae problems. I had a 46g tank that I used tap on, always had a lot of algae, this one is crystal clear. That can be bad if you have a lot of algae eating fish. I feed them algae (nori) sheets to compensate for the lack of natural algae. Good luck shopping!

The one you are talking about is a filter. You want to get a Reverse Osmosis system. If It comes with another filter... de-ionized filter, you get the water in its purest form. This is what I have I paid including shipping under $90.00. I have been extremely pleased. No hair algae, and when the tank was cycling I got minimum diatoms. I would do a search on the internet for a cheaper unit.

if you are sure that your tap doesnt have any copper in it then it should be fine, although R/O is recomended to keep PO4 and NO3 to a minimum, in the book CLOWNFISHES by Joyce D. Wilkerson it actually says that anemones kept in tap water actually lived longer then anemones kept in R/O water. So tap water is not all that bad for a reef because many people use the R/O water and dont add any addatives which are needed to help restore many of the minerals which the R/O unit took out of the water. So IMO it depends, if not used properly R/O is worse then tap.

as for RO. i started out using my well water. i had HUGE phosphate problems. i bought an RO unit for $179. i have no more phosphate problems, my algae is dying off, and the water actually smells cleaner. my prefilter is very red right now (i have a bad rust problem for some reason). if i weren't using RO all that rust would be in my tank (my house filter only takes out so much).
so yea, i think ro water is insanely important. my fish don't deserve to swim in anything else.
CPVC that orange flex pipe they use someitmes now?
In our area the gound(well water) has arsenic levels that need filered out.

Your right, but I have a question. DO i still need to add trace minerals, if my salt that I use already contains trace elements? Im guessing I dont have to right? I use instant oceanic sea salt ( it has all the trace elements according to what it says) I dont like use any other brand of salt (I tried, didnt like them)

Just havnt found a RO/DI unit with a name that I could trust. That is why the only thing I recognized was the kent marine. Anyone know of any brand names that make great RO/DI units?
