The different sections are for adding different stuff like your skimmer, return pumps, heaters etc. Some also have areas to create a refugium. Baffles (walls that are staggered at different heights) help to trap microbubbles before they get back to the main tank.
As for rock, I think 1kg equals 2.2ibs. Figure you'll need about 70ibs or about 32kg.

ok so your mom wont get you an ro unit i can understand that since i am a mom of 6 and have seen the amount of money i have spent on my kids' pets and hobbies. but will your mom buy you a brand new coffee maker? if you have to use tap water or rain water then please after you collect the water let it sit with the water open but a towel or if its 5 gallon jugs a coffee filter over so no dust settles in,then you wait for a couple days for the fun to begin, set up that coffee maker and put a filter in it pour your water in and brew(new filter for every pot of water) it is the closest you can get to purified water of some type granted this will take you a very long time to get your water for your tank but its at least a little better than just water right out of the rain barrel or out of the tap.when you are changing filters look at the one you allready used and you can see the stuff that is in the water and why ro is allways the best option.

You've misunderstood some fairly significant things.
Amquel will help neutralize the toxicity of Ammonia. It will NOT, however, remove the impurities found in tap water. I don't know about Australia (beautiful country btw, I try to get to Port Douglas every couple of years..) but here in the USA we have all sorts of other things in our water including metals like copper that can wipe out a tank permanently.

I don't think that Deathrow was trying to flame anyone at all. He is not from here (US) and has a different way of speech. "Thanks heaps" was ment as thanks a lot IMO. This poster is trying, he does not seem like he is trying to be rude at all. Deathrow, please get your water source checked for impurities. I do not think that rain water would be worse than the tap that many here in the states use. It would not have the hardness and added minerals that water from the ground does.

Great point Sep.
Thanks for pointing that out to everyone.

If you are in Western Aus...Or the more desert area then I would avoid using your rainwater as it will be very dust laden and the filter will not really get out those microscopic particles that will EVENTUALLY cause problems in your tank....If you can't get R/O water try to at least get the best filter that you can...I/E a Brita or other similar type. You can also see if there is a reef club in your area...Someone else may have RO/DI water to sell you cheap or better yet give to you for free. The hardware store should sell RO/DI units or may help you find one.

Your mom probably hasn't taken a physical science class in a while. I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure that there are factories in australia. And all the smoke coming from the smokestacks is polluting the air (not a treehugger just to let you guys know) Now when it rains the rain water absorbs all those pollutants. That makes the rain water not pure. And all those pollutants are gonna nuke your tank. At least that's how I remember it I learned it freshmen year of highschool (im a junior now)

Hm, I live just north of Jersy which is the "refinery" state. I have yet to hear of any acid rain or polluted rainwater here. I lived lived here all of my life. He could go to the local water board and ask about it though.
