sifts it through his gills

I had a goby whom did the same thing for my tank but he starved to death after a little bit after month or so. My tank has been up and running for over a year now. Heres a pic.

what is the red coral on the bottom?
my tank has been running for 5 months...over the winter im going to break the tank down and setup a 265 gal

The red one is known as a red lobophylia. So your tank is only 5 months old, that would explain the clean sand. I mean my sand bed is about 3 incehs deep and you can see red and green algae inside of it and on some parts on top. I guess the longer you have it running the more susceptible.
