Really Fine soot?????

OK, In my 29G I have this really really fine tannish sooty like stuff all over, it was in one spot on the sand, and now I am finding it on the rocks.....It is very very light too. I can siphon it with a baster, and the slightest movement stirs it up.
Any ideas on what it can be? I don't recall reading about anything that is like this

It's hard to get a pic of...BUT I think you can see it in the nooks on this rock

I get that in my tank too, it only shows up in an area where the flow runs into and then disperses. What I am thinking is that all organic material, like broken up snail poop and lawn mower blenny poop that floats around the tank, before going into the sump or skimmer, collects in certain spots. It hits the rock face and falls down at the base of it where there is a small dead spot. At first I thought it was featherduster and peanut worm poop because it is right below a hole in the rock where the back end of a feather duster is, and an opening where a peanut worm is constantly excavating. But I think I have ruled that out.

the would be grinded down detritus. try to siphon it out next water change without stirring it too much into the water column

REALLY? Why so much, and why not in any of the other tanks then? Would you suggest anything to add to a cuc?

Yup accumulated detritus. Low flow area. You could increase flow, siphon at water change, or increase CUC.

WOW...I have a K1, K2, and rio600 in this 29G...LOL....There in't much that doesn't move....
Maybe I will try repositioning the PH's......would you just suggest some more snails???? I have 1,000 of those itty bitty ceriths, a few nass, some astrea, nerites, an emerald crab, a sally light foot, scarlet hermit, and a jade hermit I think that's it.....I thought I had Ceriths, but come to think of it I think the last hermits I had (now in 225G sump) killed them off

Yeah I would just adjust the flow some. Like you said it is a place where the flow in the tank gets so low, maybe hitting a rock of the tank walls or some other object, that it is dumping whatever it is carrying. Like a river when it slows down dumps the silt out of the water column.

you should use the k1 to hit the top of the water and focus the k2 to create a movement all across the bottom.

I have the K1 and K2 circulating around the tank, and the rio pointing upwards
If I point the K's down any they blow the sand too much....

position the k1 to somewhat hit one of the panels really close to disperse the flow. i had this problem in my 10g because of the little passageway in the middle. all my detritus built up there. but after positioning my k1 to hit the wall first before it went to the other side of the aquarium, there was enough flow to create a push through the space and into the pump where it would get caught up by the skimmer

Here is a FTS of the 29G...the K2 is the one in the back righ corner...it blows straight across the back
The K1 is the one front left...blows straight across, and the RIO is top left moving top of the water
Do you think I should take the K1, and place it left back pointing towards the front of the glass???

Although you might adjust the flow to not have it accumulate there, it will most likely just accumulate somewhere else, so although out of site my look better, you would have more of a chance of forgeting about it which could cause water quality problems. It probably accumulates out of site in your other tanks. It is hard to suck all detritus out of the water column. I have just gotten used to sucking it out of that spot with my weekly water changes.
