really odd .. cobwebs in my tank???

ok well first of all i have been treating my tank with melafix for about days now due to some my blue hippo flashing..
and today i have noticed like a cob webb substance on my star and hanging off of one of my rocks.. what is it??? its kinda kreeping me out..
and also.. i have a 125 gallon tank and i have been trying to bring the salinity up for a while.. and it seems like no matter how much salt i add.. my hydrometer keep the same reading of 1.21.... so i dont know what going on there either.. i hope my hydrometer isnt broke.. either that or i guess i am underestimating how much salt i need to add in such a large tank..
but i am really concerned about the webby substance.. i have NEVER seen this before..

so i just called my local lfs a they said it could be a sponge growing??? but why would a sponge look like a bunch of co
ebs.. odd huh...

It's likely a vermitid snail. They leave out a sorta web-looking string to gather food. They're harmless.

Really can't see anything in the pics. But I go with vermatids as well.
BTW, in your first post you said hydrometer reading 1.21......I hope you meant 1.021.

here are some pics of the substance.. i looked up vermetids and the subatance looks similar but i am not seeing anything that looks like them.. unless they are hiding from me lol..

ok well the picture thing isnt workibng for me right now.. lol.. yes i meant 1.021.. but it wont ove AAAHH!!>>. then i guess i wont worry about the snails in my tank.. ive been cleaning out the substance because it looks pretty gross..
is there any way to get rid of these snails???

it could be a sponge or it could be vermetid snails. pics are too small to see here, they are on photbucket full size copy the [ img ] link here to see them.
if they are sponges, then they grow for a bit and then stop, and are harmless filter feeders.
if they are the vermited snails, they are mostly harmless too. sometimes the big ones can annoy corals near by with their mucousy drag nets. but i havent heard of them being fatal. they reproduce, but not so fast. if you dont like them, just break off the whole calcerous hard tubing that they are in. not just the shaft, but the circular section on the bottom. wow somebody might need some adult supervision for that last sentance.

ok well i just used jpeg sizer even though it leaves that dumb water mark...
i dont want to kill the snails. i will just leave them.. i dont have the heart to even kill the pestiest of creatures in my tank...

huh.. i wonder were they came from.. they have probably just grown larger in the couple of months and started letting out the mucous.. yuck.. o well..

i have thewm snail too...i hate them alot..i clean the very top of my sand and it clouds up the water and then the slime trails really show up then but most of the time you cant see the drag net

i was moving around some of my rocks today and all of a sudden poof there they were.. i thought maybe i had accidently hit one of my slugs or something...
they are ugly and nasty looking.. but iowell.. thats the saltwater thing for ya.. you never know what your gonna get

here is a big verm. snail up close.
if you are going to snap them off be careful, wear thick gloves or use tools because they are hard and sharp tubes, i have cut myself on the small ones a few times.

well the string looks like that but there is no tube. ANYWHERE>>> i have the white tubes from the tube worms but not from the snails.. its odds.. and i havnt seen the substance since yesterday when i cleaned it out.. maybe its not snails.. maybe it was as sponge somehow.. i dont have the correct lighting though.. so i am totally boggled

If it helps, here's one that's been in one of my tanks for a while. They don't seem to bother much and seem to pick up some detritus with their webs.

well if they pick up detritus they dont bother me any lol.. i know my starfish was kinda freakin out a little bit when this mucous ended up on him.. but all is well..
i have still yet to find there base.. so im still not sure if its actually one of those snails.. im sure it is.. but.. who knows
