Really stupid question

I have a hood and wanna get rid of it, i dont want eggcrate but am worried about jumpers, what can i do?
Ive seen tanks where the top has a line of 1-3 inches of plastic covering the edge of the tank so that a smaller part of the middle of the top is open, what is that called and where can i get it?

if it's what I think you are describing it's the edging around a tank and is called Euro-Bracing. It's done for reinforcement but you could probably make something similiar with some plexiglass strips and some caulk.

my .02 on plexiglass. I cut some acrylic to use as a topper for my sump to help with evaporation and within 2 days it was all bowed out. Make sure you get a decent thickness if you go with acrylic.

You can build a frame and put nylon screening over it-just hinge it for feeding and servicing. Attach the screen with clear aquarium sealant or underwater bonding 'stuff'
