I am looking for suggestions for fish in my 90 gal reef tank. I want to start putting some life into it but am unsure as to what type of fish to start with. I am looking for something Colorful, inexpensive, and fairly hardy. I know at some point I want a hawkfish and also would like a Coral beauty ange, but don't know if I should put them in this early (are they hardy enough). The tank has been up for 2 months, and is finished cycling, It will be a reef tank, with some fish to add "life".
Any suggestions?

Chromis are an excellent choice for first addition. They are very peaceful, so they won't bother newcomers. Hardy and inexpensive. Also, a small group (3-4) looks really cool swimming around together.
My first real purchase was a GS Maroon Clown.

I have 6 in my 180 that I used and they are working out great, they are really fun to watch and its cool seeing them schooling around the tank!

Anything else? how are gobies (firefish) and basslets? I dont have any sand/substrate which I've read is needed for some of these? Also are they too aggressive?

Clownfish, very hardy, colorful and inexpensive. Firefish are good beginner fish, a bit shy though. I also like royal grammas, very colorful and a good communuty fish. If you get anything like scooter blennies or something like that you are definitely gonna need some substrate. Also the substrate is a large part of the biological filteraion.

Based on the age of your system and lack of substrate I'd suggest a clown...several to pick from and all can be kewl additions. The chromis are good choices also.....if you do decide to get the coral beauty wait at least 6 months before attempting one...they definitely require a stable/mature system.

Sometimes they do sometimes they don't, just depends on the fish. I have had a CB with a few soft corals before and he never bothered them but I have heard of other people who have problems withe their CB eating corals. The CB doesn't eat the corals as much as other angels IMO.
