What is the best media setup for a large Canister filter. I just picked up a Eheim 2250 that is HUGE and I was wondering from top to bottom what is the best media setup, and how much to put in it. This is a new tank setup, for a trigger and puffer. 120g 6' tank.

In my opinion, canister filters are worthless, especially on larger aggressive set ups.
Throw it away and get a good skimmer.

carbon and sponge are pretty much all you need in a canister filter for an aggressive set up .I ran my 125 on 2 aquaclear 300(now called 110) for 3 1/2 yrs with no water quality issues what so ever and not only do I have a heavy stocked tank I also feed heavy no skimmer at all .i switched to a wet dry system but I think ill be going to canister soon also on all my non reef tanks now using the aq 110 on other tanks one being an eel tank(tess)

I alreay have one large reef tank that has a skimmer/sump/fuge setup and the only problem I have is with power outages. We have at least 2 a month and if its more than 6 hrs my overflow will let enuff water pass to get on the floor. My new fish only tank is a reef ready tank but I want to just plumb that into a large canister filter and now the tank becomes much less stress because of the closed system. If it does not work I am going to go with something else. I just want to make this tank 100% safe for my house and 100% worry free. I alreay have the canister so I am not about to ditch the idea. So if I go with a sponge, biomax , carbon combo. What goes on top, middle and bottom. I was thinking sponge on top, biomax in the middle and lots of carbon in the bottom. How does this sound?

How much carbon did you use, and how long did you run that amount before changing?
