I'm having a terrible time getting rid of red algae/slime from my l/s and l/r. Can someone help? It's getting quite frusyrating. By the way my water parameters are fine and proper skimming is used as well as uv, etc. HELP!!

More info on you system....filtration/define "water parameters are fine/how long has this system been set up/circulation/phosphates/nitrates/lighting....the more the better.
After my reef was up for about 3 months I went through a cyano bloom....I increased the circulation and manually removed as much as possible....not long after it was gone and has never been a problem since. Post additional info....and let us know how things go.....best of luck with the nasty stuff!!!

Tank has been set up for 1 1/2 years and all readings are zero except nitrate which is 20. It's a 2 inch dsb with 55 lbs. of l/r in a 55 gal tank. It's got Protein skimming, carbon filtration and 2-20w 50/50 bulbs. water changes every two weeks. about 20%. What's up?
I'm also getting it in my 125g tank. Thaty has a 4 in. sandbed and uv in addition. Again what's up??

i have red and green alge slime in my 30 gal tank...and i don't even have a skimmer...or uv...planning to get one soon...i can't get rid of that junk...i just scrape it off the walls with an alge scraper...when i'm done scraping it, i take a net and scoop it all up...

I have seen this stuff come and go with my 7g reef....never in my 36g...knock on wood....but anyway it always seems to happen when i do a big water change....like more than normal.....but i started using Red Slime remover and it went away...i use slightly less than the recommended doseage and it works great.....never came back at all...i have inverts, fish and corals in the tank and it didn't kill a thing or have a bad affect to my knowledge.....the corals or shrooms, xinea, green star polyps, none affected...keep and eye on the protien skimmer if you use it.....Red slime remover can casue it to go crazy.....

I seem to be having the same problem. My 55g is about 4months old with about 20lbs lr a Yellow tailed damsel and a Coral banded shrimp in it. The alge was taking over! My lfs suggested the water that I use to top off might contain to many impurities, until I informed them that I get the water from the research lab I work in. The water is double distilled deionized RO water! I have since been manually removing the alge with dilagence and it seems to be slowing it down! Good luck and if you have any luck let me know!

I had the same prob in my FOWLR. I switched to RO water and use only instant ocean salt. I also seeded my CC substrate with natures ocean aragonite. I was talkin to the lady at my LFS and told her what was goin on, she said:
"Use maracyn! It will clear that red gunk up in about 10 days!". I was REALLY hesitant to use it because its for fresh water, but I used 1 tab and in 2 weeks no more red slime.
