Has anyone ever used Chemi-Clean from Boyd Enterprises successfully to get rid of red algae. It states on the label that its safe for fish, inverts and corals but wanted some opinions first before I use it. I`ve tried everything else to get rid of it with no luck. All my parameters are where they are suppose to be: amm.,phos.,nitrates,PH,etc and have also reduced the timers on my lights. Thanks for the input.

I used it one time when I was still using tap water. With in 2 days all traces of red algea were gone and there were no negative effects on my tank. I have not had any problems since then but I have been using RO/DI water also. If you don't correct your nutrient problem the red algea will never stop.

I had a bloom of red algae due to my tank placed in direct sunlight in the beginning of this month. Used the chemi clean from boyd, and i havent had a resurgence yet1 (knock on wood)
Plus i think i eliminated the source. excess phosphates. This is really the key to ridding and sustaining an environment free of red slime. Eliminate the source!

Red Slime algae is really bacteria (cyanobacteria). This is not caused by phosphates. The natural way of ridding the tank of this is to first skim off as much as you can. Then do a 50% water change. Several smaller water changes will not work. You will never get the bacteria down low enough to catch up.. I expect the tank is less that a yr old and I has not matured all the way yet.. After the water change cut lights back to 4hrs a day for 4-5days then start bringing the lights up 1hr a day till back to normal. Also cut back on feeding some. Another suggestion is make sure you have a deep sand bed of at least 3-4in. This will let enough good bacteria grow to help prevent this problem..If you just cannot wait You can use a product called chemi-clean by boyd enterproses, inc... you can do a search on the internet for thier phone # or where to purchase. After using wait 2days then do the water change...Their are no short cuts...good luck...
