red algae

Ok my friend's tank is like polluted with red algae... its nasty
any ideas on how to get rid of it?
He has hermits, cerith snails, and a pepermint shrimp
the algae is actually growing on the snails shells!!

if its short, turbo snails will eat them for sure. make sure phosphate is 0.

That depends on weather its red hair algea... or cyano. A better description or a pic would help alot.

Is it a new tank? If not it's more than likely a nutrient problem of sorts...

hmmm... when looking at pics on google it resembles cyano a lot more than hair algae... it's like a giant matt of it rather than hair

the tank is a newer tank but has been established for like 4-5 months...

I had it extremely bad like your situation. I bought new bulbs, which I replace now every 10 months, and I keep them on for 8 hrs a day. I also hooked up a phosban reactor and replace the media every 90 days. After that, the algae dissappeared in a week and has never returned.

Yes very good as you can see alot of factors can atribute to a cyano outbreak. Good Luck
