red/maroonish algae on sand

I have noticed that the sand in my tank is getting some red/maroonish algae on it. twice in different spots it has kind of broke off and the piece that breaks off, floats, then kind of disengrates(sp.) back to the bottom. Is there anything I can get to keep this under control?Anything besides a fish.

Sounds like you are describing cyano bacteria, is it soft and kind of stringy in appearence and does it have air bubbles on it? If so it is most likely cyano and is usually a symptom of a nitrate problem and low flow. What are your water parameters and how much flow do you have?

yea sounds like cyano. ive heard the sand bed is usually the first place it strikes. increase the flow in your tank, cut back on feeding and do some water changes.

Yeap, sounds definately like cyano. As mentioned above, increase the flow and make sure there are no deadspots around, decrease feeding, and do water changes while at the sametime syphoning the algae out. BTW how old are you bulbs? Sometimes the bulb can cause algae growth.

Need more info: What size tank, what size maxi-jets do you have and what are your levels.
