The diatom bloom or rust algea is caused by excess silicates. Just rub it off and purchase a silicate sponge that goes in your filter from the store...using one now...... good luck.:D

Is Chemi Clean safe for reef tanks? I have a button polp in the tank currently. Once I get the slime algae under control I would like to add some mushrooms soon. Also I have done the 20% water change 3 days ago. There is not as much slime algae as before, but there is still quite a bit. Thanks for all the feedback.

I have used chemi-clean on my reef with no adverse effects. It seems that when fighting the cyano there are quite a few of us with reefs that have resorted to using it out of frustration. As stated above be sure and do the recommended 20% water change 48 hours after last dose.
