There have been volumes written on this, but in a nutshell-- red slime algae is actually cyanobacteris. It is caused be overfeeding and/or old lights and/or dead circulation spots and/or high phosphates. There are ways to address the problem, but it is better to eliminate the cause. Do you have any of the aforementioned conditions??

I'm currently battling red slime algae. I have had very high phosphates and I'm using phosgard and it is bringing them down. I did not think that I was overfeeding either. When I first started battlling it I was told by my LFS and is not bad advice but I was told to cut back on the feeding and do a lot of small water changes. I cut back to one feeding every other day and changed 5 - 10 % every week. After it continuing to spread I went and bought the Phosgard. So I would suggest a combination of the above methods. However, now that I think about it the red slime algae is in the lower part of the front of my tank where the water current is the least. Unless I reposition a power head to the front of the tank or buy one to sit in the front (which is not the natural look I want) I won't have the current there. Good luck and let me know how it works.
