As the title states, I'm having a problem with red algae on rocks and sand. I hhve su[honed it twice off the rocks but withibn two or three days it came back with a fury on rocks and gravel. I noticed a lot of the candy cane coral shrinking also. I changed the compact lighting about three or four months ago. I am using a new coral and inverterbrate product called Blackpowder purchased thru magazine, but I think it's just a coincidence the slime started about the same time, and I am looking for better growth and colors from corals. Should I cut back on lighting do water changes and remove the slime or kill it and a lot more with antibiotics :help:

There will be others chime in here with far more knowledge than I. But I think they will all agree if you can not use antibiotics or medication it is best. I'm sure everyone will want to know your tank size, lighting system, and water parameters. Might as well list them. Oh yea, probably what kind of water you're using too.

We need your water parameters (nitrites, nitrates, ph, alk, phosphates, gallons flowing per hour, etc).
Do you have a skimmer?
I've seen that black powder stuff you bought and to me it personally looked like snake oil. It could be the cause of excess nutrients, hence the cyano growth.
Cyano most frequently comes from poor water circulation. Make sure you have a turnover of ~20 gallons per hour per gallon of tank volume. The flow has to reach all portions of the tank as well, with no deadspots. For this reason numerous small powerheads are better than a few large ones.
I strongly discourage the use of Red Slime Remover or any other antibiotic in your tank. Antibiotics don't discriminate and will kill some of the beneficial bacteria as well. Worst of all, it is just a temporary solution and the problem might come back.

Cut back lights, increase water flow, check water parameters, and add more snails. Thats what I did to get rid of my slime.

I am just about to use the Chemi-Clean to get rid of my Cyano. Anyone's ideas? I have a 75 gallon reef 2 Seio 820's, 2, marineland powerheads, and 2 emperor 400 power filters. My problem may be caused by my OVERabundance of Xenia, and one Colt Coral that is really, really big. They may be blocking some of the flow. Anyway, what do you guys think about using this?
