We have had our tank up and running for approx 5 mos and started to see over the last 3 weeks this red slime over the top of our sand. We remove it by hand when it get too bad, but it always comes back.
We even added a 400 maxi jet to the bottom of the tank for circulation and it still shows back up. Any one wih a suggestion??

the red slime is cyano. you can stop it by doing more water changes and as you do it use the tube and suck up the cyano. there are dead spots in your tank meaning you need to add more flow. how big is your tank? how many fish do you have? and how much are you feeding? overfeeding can also be a problem. how long are your lights on?
go here it has all the info about cyano and how to get rid of it

It's cyanobacteria ... if you have adequate water circulation I'd try not overfeeding if you think you may be. Do you have good filtration for the size tank you have?

I had the same problem. Cut down feeding, added more flow, and shorten the time the lights were on to about 6hrs. But nothing happened. When I switched water from RO water from the grocery store, to RO/DI water from the LFS. Within 3 weeks the problem was completely gone. What type of water are you using?

I had the same problem a few months ago. I cut the amount of time my lights are on and it was gone within a few days.
