What kind of circulation do you have and what are your water perameters? Cyano is linked to poor circulation or poor water conditions or both. Find out why you have it and fix the problem at the root...products like ALLGONE are a bandaid not a cure (to be honest ALLGONE is just plant matter in a bag)...do you have a fuge?

algone cured my cyano problem and no it is NOT like a bandaid because it removes nitrate, phosphate and other nutrient problems.:D

i just went through this same ordeal.lfs recommended fresh water maracyn at half the recommended doseage.i know alot of people here dont believe in puting antibacterial medications in their tanks but after two days my cyano was all gone,i stopped using it and it hasnt come back yet.:) it didnt seem to affect any of my corals or other inverts.

My point exactly, it removes things that should NOT be in a well maintained tank (find out why you have Amm, Trates and Trites and fix that) do not just slap a bandaid on it....Allgone = Bandaid :D

Settle down guys. We have all gone through periods of algae. Some would argue that you should never put any chemicals, other than calcium and buffers or course, inot your tank. I disagree with this. I had a red algae problem a long time ago after my tank had been runnig for about 2.5 months. My parameters were fine. All kinds of things could be the root of the problem. I agree that you should try to find the problem and eliominate any source that could promote the red slime. However, I believe Ultralife (or something like that) makes a red slime remover. It is a yellow powder that you mix with a little of your tank water. The algae will be gone in less than 48 hours. Mine never returned and it had no harmful effects on any of my inverts or fish. My tank is over three years old and is well established. Face it; sometimes you do what you have to to correct your problems. It is not necessarily a band-aid per say. It worked for me, but I would try to eliminate any source that might cause the problem again.

This is all great information to know but the real question is; Why do you have cyano in your tank? I had it on mine and after reading several postings here and books. I was using filtered tap water instead of RO. Also my lights were more than a year old. There can be a number of things that create the bacteria. Also not doing regular water changes. Get educated with it before you start adding chemicals to your tank that you dont really need or might hurt your livestock on the long run.
Good luck.

search for a thread by JustinX on "How to rid your tank of redslime!"
It will shed a lot of light for you . . . .

I have to say that Red Slime Remover does work...but keep an eye on your pH, read the fine print on the box. It cured my problem, but killed at least 3 fish cause I wasnt paying attention. My ph dropped to like 7.8 or lower; took me at least a week to get it back to normal. If you must use a chemical, test your params daily and be ready to do a significant water change. I have read that people have used it and did water change like a day or 2 after treatment with no probs, but I dont recommend it.
You obviously have a short light period, but is it getting any direct/indirect sunlight? Often that can cause an outbreak. We're battling the slime right now and I think that is part of our prob, so I've been gradually changing our sched. and lessening (is that a word :notsure: ) feedings and, of course, more frequent water changes. We definitely have seen a difference. Also, as mentioned before, water circulation. In an attempt to test this theory, I repositioned 1 of the PH toward the substrate and have seen a noticeable diff in the area where there is more flow. Looking into getting another PH or 2 soon. HTH.

My tank is in it's 4th month, and in efforts to enhance my coraline algea I began dosing a supplement. I broke out in red slime just like u did. I used a product called "red slime remover by Ultra life." It was also a yellow powder and in 48hrs.....it was gone....did a water change....and smooth sailing.

thanks for all the info. I do water changes every week (10%) use only RO water for top off and also use it to mix with Oceanic salt and the bulbs are 4 months old. As far as water circ goes I have two returns running from a GenX 100 with about 5 feet of hose from pump to returns... I have one other PH rated at 300 GPH. I don't have any sunlight hitting the tank at all.(tank is a room divider and all blinds are always shut) the tank is visiable from three sides so I can only have two PH at one end. I will get another PH and see if that helps. The side without the power head is where most of the redslime is located. I just think it strange that after the lights are off all night there isn't a trace left on that one side... is that how Red slime works??? Well thanks again. Now after I fix this I need to figure out how to catch three rather large crabs..(they ate my sand sifting starfish) but that will be the next question in this forum. thanks again...

Hopefully its is just a flow issue (easy to fix), but yes that is how red slime (cyanobacteria) works. Gone at night and back when lights on. Here's the link to the thread mentioned above---its long, but its full of good sound info. HTH

Ok so we know the red slime remover is a band aid, but until I can get to the bottom of my red slime problem, i have a question: Does anyone have any experience with the Ultralife slime remover and Coral? Does it affect coral at all? I have the stuff but im scared to use it.:nervous:

I wouldn't use it . . . too risky IMO and red slime is really easy to get rid of.

I used it with no ill effects to either coral or inverts quite awhile back. It was not risky at all for me. Its your tank and your business. some folks are saying that its risky, others are not. Are the folks that say its risky speaking from experience? I don't know, but I am.
