red slime problem

When the product says "reef safe", in a sense it is because it will not harm invertebrate animals such as corals, snails, etc. However the product that you are dosing is an anti-biotic. It destroys any and all bacteria, including cyanobacteria as well as denitrifying bacteria.
I have not used the product and I never will. I have worked far too hard to build and establish a bacteria population that is capable of handling the waste produced by the inhabitants of my system. Why risk destroying that when there are more effective, safer, and simpler methods of accomplishing the same goal?

Just because its an "antibiotic" doesnt mean it kills all bacteria. Most antibiotics target and work well on specific groups of bacteria, and this is why doctors (and dentists) prescribe a specific drug for a specific infection. Therefore it is possible that the ultralife stuff may kill red slime, but not have as great an effect on the nitrifying bacteria. Does anyone know??
I do agree with you 007 that I have worked too hard and invested too much in the tank to just dose it without investigating!

I recently tried Marine S.A.T.
worked great on cleaning up my tank of green hair and red slim.
I had gotten a great deal on 40+lbs of LR and it ended up causeing a cycle Marine SAT controled it and cleaned up the tank completly..
havent seen any red slime or green hair since.. although i think my bi-color is controling the green hair..:D

personally, i would try and fix the problem mechanically and not chemically. If you must resort to chemicals then do it, but i am not a fan of chemicals =(.

I would be more willing to try this product as it is (to the best of my knowledge and understanding) not actually a chemical but an organism that out competes the nuisance algaes for nutrients.
