Gen,
Dont worry about the lights they are not causing the problem a bacteria is. If you choose to not medicate then the only choice you have is to do 10% water changes each week while cleaning off the slime and eventually it will die off IMO. As to your water you use to top off with what is prime? do you use RODI water or is it straight from the tap? If so you may have other things going on like high phosphates, etc. Try buying your water from your LSF you can usually get it for around .50 per gallon.

lol....sorry Gen don't think anyone was trying to be selfish just sharing different experiences. I could only comment on the LS. It sounds as if this is cyano but I personally have never had a problem with this algae. Phosphates seem to be a big reason for algae growth. Get a test and start there. Try to turn the lights off and remove as much of the algae physically as possible. By the way...blue light promotes algae growth. Some of the guys that have more experience with reef tanks than I will help you out. I think starting with the phosphates and maybe not running your actininc as long may help. Trust me someone will correct me if I am wrong lol. Good Luck

I meant I was the selfish one, wanting the attention. I don't want anyone getting into heated discussions over my post. So I should change the blue light. what about the "Red Slim" med she said she has had her tank for 14 years and used it and never had a problem. she said the slime would not go away on its own. I also use tap water with prime, it takes out the chlorine from the water.By the way Amoroso6 where do you buy the colorful corals, your tank is beautiful.

Gen I dont think you should take out your blue lights. Maybe cut back on the time you use them until this algae is under control. I think it could be a combination of things that is causing this. Your phosphates could be high and with the blue lighting it is prime for this kinda growth. Although I am guessing here on the phosphates. I only use actininc lighting on my tank. I personally do not like to use meds unless it is a last resort. Try to due a search on this board about red algae and see what you could find. In my readings red algae have to have blue lighting and phosphates to get to be out of control. But hell I am by no way an expert, but I think we all agree that using the meds at this point could be put off at least until you try some other things listed. I would do a 20 percent water change and try to remove as much of the red algae as possible...limit the use if not discontinue use of blue lighting until this is under control and do test your phosphates. Seems like a good place to start without chancing on hurting anything in your tank.
p.s. Do you have enough water movement?
