I save some reddish purple stuff on my live rock and it seems to be getting bigger and bigger. Could this be red algae? If so, is it okay in the tank, and is there anything I can do to get ride of it? Thanks for the info!
can you blow it off with a turkey baster? if its cyano then you gotta worry about it covering your corals. it gets really annoying
check your phosphates and nitrates and reduce the ammount you might be feeding. its usually a cause of excess nutrients. people might suggest lights off for 2-3 days but i find it comes back right away
how long has this tank been set up? What are your water parameters reading? If the red/purple stuff is not coming off of the rock then it may be coraline algae which is, for most, very desireable. It will continue to grow and eventuaaly start on the glass and everything else. If it is red slime algae - there are ways to address it quickly but you will still need to find the root cause to prevent future outbreaks.
