red vs blue crabs

Blue hermits have a bad reputation for being aggressive... left handed hermits also have a bad reputation... red hermits seems to be the most recommended. Personally I keep all of them and like them all.

I have some blue legs and about two days ago I got some queen conch to clean my sand and the blue legs kill two of the new conch and took over their shells even when I already had some extra shells for the blue legs

I'd guess the conches died from bad acclimation and the crabs ate them. My blue legs have never harmed anything.

I suppose blue and red hermits are good, the blue ones, I think, are also very attractive and sure to add alot of "wow" to your tank. That is, depending on what kind of tank you have.

I have both in my tank and they leave each other alone.
I asked the LFS if there could be a problem..............he just said make sure they stay on there own side of the tank........hehehe....hehehehe...cause it might start a gang war..........
so i asked shoould i get them their own bandanas too....heheeheheheeeee.....ok it was funny when it was going on.
The tanks that they have then in there are mixed with a lot fo different inverts. and it didn't seem like there was any issues at all.
I did notice that the Blues seem to grow a lot faster than the red ones....if the red ones are even supposed to get big that is cause they seem to have stayed the same.

Ok why would you do that to your dog?

It is a zebra hermit. Heshe (?) is known as a left handed hermit, due to a larger left claw than the right.
Just for a heads up.
I have had red, blue, and zebra in my tank. About 50 each of each species.
I now have mostly blue and zebra. I might have one red left. Maybe.
Blue and Zebra are aggressive, in that any snail on a scale smaller than a turbo they have "aquired" its shell. I have tons of empty shells, they just go after my snails.
That said, I truly enjoy the diversity of the hermits in my tank, and I will probably continue to get zebras.
Personal preference, as I like the look of them.
My .02.

I have bought red, blue, and emerald crabs. Also turbo, mexican, and nassarius snails. After about 6 months all the blue leg crabs have killed everybody for there shells except 2 red leg and a handful of snails. I have a snail shell graveyard on both corners of my tank. The neat thing is seeing a crab in a snail shell. IMO don't get blue leg cuz they kill anything with a shell. Don't know why but I have seen them kill for a smaller shell. :notsure:

I have mostly blue leg crabs, a couple reds (I think their cool, but harder to find). my blue leg crabs are always fighting among themselves, but so far I haven't seen them bothering my other aquarium occupants.

So, here's a good conclusion based on what has been posted and on my own experience.
Red leg/Scarlet hermits are less aggressive but also often more expensive and shorter lived
Zebra and Blue hermits are more aggressive but cheaper and longer lived.
Not once have I witnessed a red leg/scarlet hermit attacking a snail, but they also seem to die off. Additionally I don't believe they do anywhere near as much in cleaning the tank.
The only downside to the zebras and blue legs is they are aggressive, however that means they are also more agressive at cleaning the tank.
My preference: zebras and blues for performance, scarlets for looks. What do you need them for?

My Scarlet's (reds) killed most of my snails the first round of cleaning crew critters I got. I have 5 blue's and 3 red's with 5 Margarita snails and 1 Astrea. 1 of the Margarita's recently died, no one's eaten him or taken his shell, just left him there to slowly close up in his shell. I have seen the red hermits fight among each other for their shells, even though there are empty shells in the tank.
The blues seem to have more personality.

If your hermits are killing your snails you have too many hermits. They are starving (not enough algae for all of them) so they gotta kill the snails to eat... Ove the past year I have kept 8 different species of hermits in my tank: Blue Leg, Mexican Red Tip, Scarlet Reef, Orange Claw, Hawaiian Zebra, Blue Knuckle, Electric Orange, plus some that are unnamed... none have ever killed my snails to any large degree. I currently have 10-15 hermits of mixed species in my 70 gallon. People that have 50 hermits in a small tank and wonder why they eat their snails make me laugh.
