So there is this guy that I just met that works as a contractor through my lfs. He services tanks. He has done it for 4 years and has owned several fish stores with his father and has been into fish for 15 years. He claims and I am starting to believe him after seeing some of his accounts and his personal fish tanks that with a top of the line ro untit and making your own salt water that I won't even need to add chemicals and could easily go 3 weeks without water changes and have perfect wiater quality. He has one of his tanks at his house that is so packed with hard and soft coral and the best looking purple liverock I have ever seen. He says that he hasn't put one drop of chemicals in in 5 years. I don't know, but he says that he will show me and get me started on it the way he has it and mine will look that good to. How far fetched does this sound?????

Not very far-fetched at all. If you use RO/DI water, and perform WEEKLY WCs, then you shouldn't need to add very much. Maybe some trace elements, like strontium or molybdenum, but usually if you have a quality salt mix, like Instant Ocean or Reef Crystals, the trace elements are already in it. So by doing WCs, you basically dose the tank with them.

If your going to have a lot of hard coral you will need to add calcium and buffer.

He said no calcium. Although he said that he would recomend not to use instant ocean that the other tow brands had for of the supplements than that one. But I guess its personal choice.
