Hi all! i have seen a thread before that has the answer's im looking for but cant seem to find it!!! can you help? i am looking for a safe putty to use to attach frags to larger rocks in the tank. so basically be able to "glue" rock to rock. i know they make special putty out there but i rather support a local store rather then buy online. any thoughts on what is safe to use?
thank you!!

beware, marine putty that you find in the hardware stores is not safe until it is cured 24 hours. So it is no good for frags.

Sorry the pics in this link are so big. When I went back to fix them my edit time was over.....
Safe Common Epoxy's
There is one that said it was safe to use immediately..... not that I would do it.

aquamend is what its called i think. i have seen the exact same thing at home depot before but not sure if they are identically the same and if the home depot version is reef safe or not?. A good trick to use though when applying the putty so it eventually looks more natural is after applying the putty to whatever push a small piece of LR of base rock into any visible parts. I don't lik how its a smooth surface afterward so when it changes color/gets covered by coraline it looks more natural that way.

i just found the thread after reading into more threads i believe cranberry is the one that posted what i seen before! but i found the thread and on some of the different putties it states safe to add to the tank after 24 hours of cure time. but if your going to glue coral rocks to larger rocks in the tank ya cant leave the coral out that long. i am going to run to the store and see what they have.
the nearest REAL pet store near me is a hour away and i forgot to buy some yesterday when i was there

but thanks for your help!

My LFS has a putty that is green on the outside with a white inside. You mixit up until it is white and use it right away. I attached about 10 corals one day and my skimmer went nuts!!

The LFS uses it with no ill effect and I had no issues, just emptied skimmer twice in one day.

The Aquamend company I contacted was the one that sells the product at Home Depot. I've used sticks of it in the past but I have no recollection if I put uncured stuff in a inhabited tank or not.... I can remember putting it on dry.
Let's compare the MSDS sheets and see what the products differences are. I contacted those 4 places myself and asked if the putty was safe to use in saltwater aquariums .... they said yes. 3 of the 4 said yes, after 24 hours. The one said it was safe immediately. If their MSDS is all the same, and like aquarium putty, I'd say use it like aquarium putty.

I've used (sigh...can't believe I'm admitting to even buying this stuff...) Mighty Putty in my 110. Cured underwater, no ill effects to fish or corals, but.....as mentioned above, my skimmer goes into overload also when I use it.

ok i found some JB weld marine that was on the list. what i will do is try a little bit of it and put it in my small tank with a skimmer i have a few other frags in there but i will keep it away from the fish for the time being. and i will look into finding out the msd on the JB WELD.
the package also says that its going to turn white when mixed and ready to use so was thinking about taking rock rubble like the other person stated to kinda cover the white up.
will work on this tomorrow during the snow storm so should have answers on how it goes tomorrow evening.
thanks for all your help everyone!!

I have been using the following for years with no problems. I mix a ball of it, put super glue gel on both sides of the putty and stick frag where ever I want it underwater.
Loctite 5 min epoxy
Aquamend
Mighty putty

JB Weld was one of the places that told me you didn't have to wait the 24 hours. I'm sure the other companies are being cautious, and I'm actually surprised they even said it was safe. Most companies who make things for non-aquarium uses won't agree to it being safe in an aquarium for liability reasons... and the fact they just don't know because it had never been tested as such.
I have the MSDS sheets on an old crashed computer... I'm now backing up to an external drive and to an online service.... so I know those sheets are out there... now to find them.

Go back to that link above again for the other thread... I've added information.
Ignore my post#2, I'm trying to get that one deleted.

The green and white stuff you mention is called "hold fast" I looked at it yesturday at my lfs. I was thinking about getting some.
I have one thing I wanted you to clarify though: The package says to dry both rocks, apply the putty, then let them set 30 minutes before putting them back in the tank. Is that what you did? or did you put them back in the tank right away? I'm hesitant to leave corals out of the tank for 30 minutes.

I've taken the marine stuff and put it right in my tank. It kind of goes goopy if it isn't allowed to set... but it set in time...
